Authors such as John Dewey, Edna Ferber, Dashiell Hammett, and Theodore White all stood accused, as did many U.S. career diplomats. The political witch hunts tarnished a generation of aspiring public servants across all walks of life but particularly those in more liberal circles. Years later, reporter E.J. Kahn of the New Yorker magazine blamed McCarthy for the fumbling U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Kahn made a case that the State Department had been so decimated 15 years earlier by McCarthy’s recklessness that the diplomats with knowledge of China and Asia were mostly gone. The State Department had a vacuum of expert knowledge of Asian languages, cultures, and peoples, thus was unprepared to deal with the complexities of the Vietnamwar.
Most would agree that there had been a fair amount of journalistic failurein regard to McCarthy’s unsubstantiated but relentless allegations. The Bennett Model for news, whatever its virtues, had shown flaws with its emphasis on superficial facts, deadlines, and an obsession for appearances of objectivity.
