More details;

White southerners spent years during reconstruction being politically disenfranchised, watching their state governments that were essentially under military occupation be taken over by “scalawags” (southern collaborators with carpetbaggers), carpetbaggers and black men who were sorely abused by the former. They were also being dispossessed of what property they’d been able to keep over the course of the war, due to new, usurious taxes that they could not pay. There was a great deal of distress, dislocation and anger.

Black southerners fared even worse. There was no real effort to aid newly freed slaves. There was a lot of hardship, poverty, even starvation. Many ended up right back on the plantations working as tenant farmers, “sharecroppers,” as did the poorer whites. It was not a good system, very difficult, crop failure due to drought or storm damage was utterly ruinous.

That was the situation at large, but there were pockets of prosperity, in a handful of cities that weren’t left in ruins by the war, known to many as “carpetbagger towns.” Yes, they were resented. But, as time wore on with more and more suffering dislocation due to losing their farms, people gravitated to the larger towns and cities, textile work for the hated carpetbaggers. Didn’t pay much, work conditions were horrible but it keet a roof over their heads and food in their bellies.

Not too many southerners either black or white have much good to say about the reconstruction years.
