Study Preview The Internet was conceived as a commercial-free communication network. That concept evaporated as the Internet’s potential for e-commerce became evident. Commercial sites are often catalog-like, offering products that can be shipped to customers, downloaded, or they provide services for a fee. One of the biggest commercial Internet-based sites is Amazon.com, which began by selling books, and is now considered the world’s largest virtual store, selling just about everything one can think of.

As the Internet was coming together under National Science Foundation auspices in the 1980s, the creators were of one mind about keeping the system commercial-free. When it came time to organize the Internet into useful segments with domain names, the suffixes approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the chief Internet oversight agency, included the suffixes .com, for commercial sites; .net, used at one time for Internet companies;.org, for organizations, at one time primarily not-for-profits; and .edu for educational institutions. Less commonly used suffixes include: .biz for small businesses, and info for resource websites.
