Sisters in Crime. Approximately 3,600 mystery writers belong to this organization. Its stated mission is to support women crime writers. It was established “to promote the advancement, recognition, and professional development of women crime writers” in an environment where they reported graphic sadism against women in that genre. This was coupled with discrimination against these writers’ work in professional venues. In particular, female crime writers were subject to unequal treatment in terms of books reviewed and nominations for awards, which did not correspond to their high level of participation in the crime writing field.
American Society of News Editors. When it was founded in 1922, the society was meant to serve individual newspaper editors in cities of 100,00 or more but since then it has broadened its scope. In response to two critical magazine articles about the way that the news was published and the ethics behind the choices of stories and the ways in which they were framed, ASNE founders banded together to advance the profession by creating a code of ethics and a way to discuss professional ideals and shared solutions to problems. There are about 450 members.
Society of Professional Journalists. SPJ, founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, “…is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.” Among its goals is free flow of information, the protection of free speech under the First Amendment, a high ethical bar and journalistic excellence, and to encourage new talent and diversity in the profession. There are 175 active chapters and 300 chapter charters, with a national membership that fluctuates between about 700 and 7,500, including students and journalists across all media.
