With animated movies, nature documentaries, and pre-teen television shows like the Mickey Mouse Club, Disney’s earned a reputation for family-friendly entertainment by the mid-1950s. Theme parks reinforced the dominance of the Disney brand. For the next 20-plus years, the mandate at Disney was to cultivate and diversify that brand. In 1995 Disney moved beyond family fare with cutting-edge and niche movies like Powder and Dangerous Minds, but assigned such projects to subsidiary units and partnerships to keep the Disney aura wholesome. Films were produced through Touchstone, Caravan, Hollywood Pictures, and Miramax. Meanwhile, Disney’s distribution unit at the time, Buena Vista, the largest in the world, branched out into producing Broadway plays. The Lion King was a great success in 1995, and the play

based on Disney’s hit film is still a hit musical on Broadway. In addition, Disney licensed Disney on Ice to Feld Entertainment, and the touring Disney on Ice shows and Disney Live (the Disney on Ice without the ice) have generated huge profits for the company.
Despite these successes, Disney experienced a run of animated feature flops. After much company infighting, Disney’s 2006 purchase (for $7.4 billion) of Pixar animation studios from Apple’s Steve Jobs ended Pixar’s challenges to its animation preeminence but made Jobs the largest Disney shareholder and put him on the Disney board of directors.
Disney has lots of blockbuster signature products. In 2014, the immensely successful Frozen was released, followed by its 2015 sequel, Frozen Fever. Highest among Disney’s 2015 hit releases were Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Cinderella.
